Since I’ve started internet marketing, I’ve gotten a lot of great questions from people.
So let’s dig right in with one that requires multiple answers, shall we?
Q: “Hey Doug, for someone just starting out. What do I need to build a list?”
A: Well, this goes back to one of my first emails I’ve ever sent. In order for you to build a list, you’re going to need the following:
– An auto-responder.
– A website.
– A squeeze page.
So let’s summarize what all this means starting with an auto-responder.
(DISCLAIMER: Just so you know, the links below are affiliate links. Yes, I do make a commission if you click them, but these are all the products I personally use and would recommend. If you don’t wanna ‘hook a brother up’ feel free to google them instead. You’ll see they are the same price regardless. I ain’t no hater! 😛 )
Think of an auto-responder as a butler that delivers information to your house guests 24/7.
This is arguably the most crucial of the bunch because without it, you have no viable means of getting information to your readers. (imagine me sending an email manually to 10,000 people…ain’t gonna happen.)
I personally use Aweber. You can sign up for it and try it out for $1. (I think they are still doing that) and there are loads of tutorials to help you get started.
As far as a website is concerned, you’re going to need 3 things.
A domain name. (www.yourdomainnameisthispart.com)
A hosting package. (you need a place to ‘park’ your domain)
A reliable system. (something that makes it easy to build pages)
As far as the domain goes, you can make it WHATEVER you want. Personally, I try to shy away from .info, .biz and .tv. They just seem too shady for me. Stick to the .net and .com’s. Trust me.
To get a domain, I personally like Godaddy.
HOWEVER! I do not suggest you use Godaddy for hosting.
They are overpriced in my opinion. I personally use Hostgator. I pay something like 15 bucks a month and get unlimited EVERYTHING. Email accounts, ftp accounts, parked domains, etc. And I’ve never had
a problem with them. http://ctrl-alt-success.com/marketing/hostgator
As for a reliable system. I recommend a 100% free one.
It’s a ‘content management’ system and makes building blog posts and pages a breeze.
Lastly, you’ll need a squeeze page.
Now, you can find countless videos on how to build a squeeze page.
But instead of learning how to code or having someone else do it for you. (and having to pay them of course.) I recommend OptimizePress.
It’s a plugin for WordPress and it takes all of the guess work out of creating pages and will save you SO much time. You can check out their video of it here:
Easy enough right?
Once you break things down to the basics, it doesn’t seem so daunting.
Now there ARE free alternatives out there, but to be honest with you they won’t get you too far. They are much harder to use, they are a lot more time consuming and at the end of the day…
…they are free for a reason.
I hope this clears things up a bit for you. As I’ve always said, you can reply in the comments with any questions you have. I’m here to help.
PS. I made a post a while back that has most of this information here but in a little more detail. Here’s the link below.
